The UIA holds an investment challenge every semester, in which participants are invited to manage a virtual portfolio of $100,000. This has been a huge attraction for members and we see an increasing level of participation every semester. In our view, the best way to learn more about money and investing is investing in real markets and learning through daily market movements. Having a mock portfolio like this will provide the ideal platform to learn more about investment techniques, monitoring portfolios and managing and hedging the level of risk associated with having an active stock portfolio. Since learning about the equity markets begins with investing in stocks, we allow long and short equity trades. There is a Market Update every meeting, presented by the Executive Board, allowing participants to keep track of moving markets and understanding what’s causing the volatility.
